Parasitic modes in gyrotrons with a highly overmoded cavity normally compete with the operating mode. However, under certain conditions some parasitic modes may play a constructive role and help to improve gyrotron performance. We call this effect "mode cooperation". In a highly oversized cavity it is almost impossible to eliminate all parasitic modes completely. But one may expect higher efficiency and more stable operation by choosing an operating mode neighboring to a cooperating mode instead of to a competing mode. The mechanism of mode cooperation and some supportive experimental observations will be discussed in the next paragraph.
