Abstract
Measurements are reported of plasma formation in the cathode region of a pulsed cold-cathode gyrotron. The plasma has been directly observed using streak photography and correlated measurements have been made of the simultaneous millimetre-wave output. These experiments provide confirmation of the role of plasma in determining the pulse duration in cold-cathode gyrotrons. To further understand the gap closure fast current and voltage diagnostics were used to determine the diode impedance collapse during the pulse simultaneous with the streak photograph and the mm-wave output.
