Abstract
A 60 cm diameter far-infrared balloon-borne telescope has been developed at ETH Zurich in collaboration with the Geneva Observatory. Its design is based on similar balloon-borne telescopes built by the authors for successful far-infrared solar spectroscopy and imaging. The Cassegrain-type telescope is now equipped with symmetric secondary-mirror chopping and an attached photometer including a liquid helium cooled silicon bolometer with an NEP of 1.3 • 10-14 w/Hz1/2 and three of five metal mesh bandpass filters at our disposal and centered at the wavelengths 50 lim, 80 gm, 130 gm, 250 gm and 310 rim. The characteristics of the last four filters are illustrated in the figure. These bandpass filters are the narrowest ever applied in astronomic far-infrared photometry. They have to be compared with the broad-band filters of the satellite IRAS [1] as well as with the filters used in the balloon-borne Steward Observatory [2] and in the Kuiper Airborne Observatory [3], which provided so far the most advanced far-infrared surveys of the galactic Cygnus-X region.
