Abstract
Recently, quasi-optical circuits have been of growing interest for compact and simple microwave and millimeter-wave circuits[1]. As an active source, an FET is frequently chosen for the purpose of applying MMIC technology. In addition, the FET is found to be a useful device for the optical control of microwave circuits as demonstrated by examples such as the active filter and the HEMT oscillator with laser illumination. This paper describes the experimental results of the optical control of two types of quasi-optical oscillators. The first is a reactive FET illuminated by an optical source. The second circuit consists of a double-function MESFET as an active source and the FET with a variable reactance by illumination. The tuning ranges and the antenna patterns of these two types of circuits are compared.
