Abstract
Experiments are underway to generate high power microwave pulses from a gyrotron-backward- wave-oscillator (gyro-BWO) with electron beam parameters of 0.7-0.8 MeV, 1-4 kA, and 0.5-4 is. Tapered interaction structures are being investigated for enhancing the power and pulselength over previous experiments. Experiments and MAGIC code simulations have been run for uniform versus tapered structures with varying magnitudes of linear tapering: 10%, 23% and 43%. Experiments show qualitative agreement with the trends predicted by the code in that the 10% downtapered tube gives the best combination of power and pulselength.
