3 September 1993 Contribution of depth information to ground vehicle identification using laser radar imagery data

Abstract
Laser Radar (LADAR) is considered by researchers in the Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) field to be the best sensor for accurate target identification. While it is known that a classifier utilizing both boundary and depth contour information can outperform a classifier which uses only the boundary contour information, the precise contribution of target depth information beyond that of boundary contour data in LADAR imagery has not been thoroughly investigated. This paper addresses that question. The test set used in the experiment includes approximately 50 LADAR images acquired in 1986 at the U.S. Army A. P. Hill test site using Raytheon's Tri-Service Laser Radar Sensor. Through the testing, each image is reduced in size by a factor of 4, 9, and 16 to simulate longer-range data and to expand the test set.
