Abstract
Networks are an important component of a picture archiving and communication system (PACS). The development of PACS has partially been a function of the availability of network technology. On the other hand, the specific needs of medical image transfer have, although to a somewhat lesser extent, impacted changes in network technology. Most important is the development of a digital imaging and communications standard (DICOM) for medical image transfer which could lead to a more universal 'image transfer' standard to be used outside of the medical field. The need for large image data transfer also promoted the early use of new technologies such as asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) packet switched networks and other high speed networks. This paper will review the development of computer networks, the history of PACS and their mutual interaction.
