We studied image forming ability of step type of amplitude filter whose amplitude distribution varies discontinuously like a step in terms of optical transfer function(OTF). It makes manufacture easier, so it can be applied easily to the practical optical system. Among the non-uniform amplitude varying continuously that have been recognized to improve image forming abilities, a Gaussian amplitude variation was chosen as a reference form in this paper. We divide the pupil to several zones, and determine the uniform amplitude transmittance in each zone. The various step types of amplitude filter were made by changing the number of the zones. We calculated the OTFs of optical systems with the different step types of amplitude filter. A optical system was considered when it had either simple aberration such as defocus, spherical aberration and coma or a combination of aberrations.
