Abstract
The switching and routing of parallel data streams between communication partners is a key feature in infor- mation systems: in telecommunications the switch fabric of a telephone exchange performs information routing; in computing routing networks are often employed for interprocessor communications within a multiprocessor system. Recently, optics is widely investigated [1] for its use in short range interconnections between electronic processing elements. The main advantages expected in comparison with electrical wiring are: high data, throughput, reduced crosstalk and electromagnetic interference, galvanic isolation between modules, possibly re- duced power consumption for communications and a corresponding increase in packing density. The simplest examples for optical short range interconnections are found between the switching stages in a multistage net- work used as switch fabric in a telephone exchange and will be studied in this paper.
