Binary dielectric gratings with high spatial frequencies are analysed with respect to their antireflection properties. Effective medium theory combined with thin-film theory is applied to determine the conditions of zero-reflectivity. The range of validity of this approximate procedure is demonstrated using rigorous electromagnetic theory.
