Abstract
Earlier treatments of scalar and electromagnetic focusing problems have been based on either the Debye or the Kirchhoff approximation. Recently, the Kirchhoff theory has been shown to be superior to the Debye theory at low Fresnel numbers, but further theoretical tests of either theory are hampered by the lack of exact solutions. Therefore, exact solutions are constructed in this paper for the focusing of 2D electromagnetic waves through a slit in a perfectly conducting screen.
