Abstract
A novel method for mapping two-dimensional time-sequential birefringent parameters in an anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal cell is described. Since there remain space and time dependent irregularities in birefringence, the elliptically polarized beam of light transmitted by the liquid crystal cell becomes spatiotemporal in state of polarization (SOP). A reference beam of light with two orthogonal linearly polarized components is made to interfere with the elliptically polarized signal beam mentioned above, which produces a two-crossed interference pattern. This pattern is formed over a CCD TV camera from which the significant parameters can be taken out for determining a change in two-principal refractive indices as well as their directions. No use of any optical components for polarization alignment makes it possible to follow a rapid change in birefringence distribution within the maximum frame rate of the CCD TV camera. A change in time-dependent birefringence is measured at every 0.1 ms in the demonstrative experiment.
