Abstract
Recently, multiresolution representations have been successfully used in a broad class of applications in the image analysis and image processing domain. It has been especially demonstrated, that the discrete multiresolution (or wavelet) transforms are well suited for image coding in both, high and low rate image compression. The wavelet-based image compression techniques surpass impressively all other methods known until now. In this paper a low-complexity high-performance method for image data compression in the discrete wavelet transform domain is presented. The method is based on adaptive run-length coding of the quantized wavelet coefficients. The method utilizes a dynamic Huffman coder. The simplified version of the method employs a very simple adaptive coding scheme based on the recency rank coder instead of the dynamic Huffman coder. On the decoder side, locally adaptive amplitude reconstruction can optionally be used. The gain of this optimized reconstruction is about 0.3 - 0.5 dB.
