23 June 1993 Direct surface reconstruction from textured images

In this research, we propose a new shape from texture (SFT) algorithm. Unlike most existing SFT algorithms, it takes all possible texture distortion effects and recovers the surface heights of curved objects directly. The basic idea of our approach is to use the semi-perspective projection model based on the solid angle concept and approximation of a curved surface with a triangular element surface model. With these models, we relate the densities of textural primitives in triangular domains to nodal height variables of the curved surface directly. This procedure leads to a nonlinear system of equations which are then solved via a global energy minimization scheme and a successive linearization scheme. Estimation of the local textural density using dots and line segment edges of texels is also discussed.
