Abstract
Efforts to characterize the thermal decomposition products of polymers typically employ techniques such as TG/IR and TG/MS. Unfortunately, in most decompositions a myriad of products are evolved simultaneously, limiting the effectiveness of these techniques. Trapping the effluents of the TG and subjecting the trapped materials to separation by GC prior to analysis by IR or MS aids in the identification of the effluents, but the thermal dependency (that is, the temperature at which the material is evolved) is lost. A method to determine the identity of the components and the temperature range over which the materials are evolved is described here.
