Abstract
Low temperature measurements have been successfully applied to study the H-bond network in methyl-(beta) -D-galactopyranoside in the crystalline phase. Deuterium exchange experiments were required to get insight into vibrational coupling of the OH groups in the chain. Wavenumber-temperature coefficients may be used to characterize the O- H(DOT)(DOT)(DOT)O bonds. The effect of deuterium exchange on H-bond cooperativity is recognized in the OH stretching absorption at approximately 3360 cm-1 and the corresponding OD.
