Abstract
Far infrared photoconductors find important applications in astronomy, Earth observation and laboratory spectroscopy.We will review the main performance characteristics of these detectors, and discuss the choice of detector type, readoutelectronics, operating temperature etc., for a given application. The optimisation of two detector systems, one forlow-background space astronomy ( the Long Wavelength Spectrometer - LWS - for the Infrared Space Observatory)and one for a high-background aircraft experiment (SATIRE - Spectroscopy of the Atmosphere using Far InfraredEmission) will be described.
