Abstract
Windows, which provide the barrier to maintain the vacuum envelope in a microwave tube, are criticalcomponents in high-average-power microwave sources, especially at millimeter wavelengths. As RF powerlevels approach the 100's of kWs to 1 MW range (CW), the window assembly experiences severe thermal andmechanical stresses. Depending on the source, the bandwidth of the window may be less than 1 GHz forgyrotron oscillators or up to —20 GHz for the FOM Institute's fast-tunable, free-electron-maser [1]. Thebandwidth requirements give rise to a number of window configurations where the common goal is locallydistributed heat dissipation. In order to better understand the transmission and RF properties of these microwavestructures, we use detailed time-dependent field solvers.
