Abstract
The aim of the present paper is to discuss the application of IR detectors and focal plane concepts to spaceborneremote sensing in terms of performance requirements and current technology. Critical aspects such as detectorcharacterisation, material selection, pre and post detection processing, interconnection methodologies will bereviewed in the context of a number of space programmes. Additionally, the strong interdependence of thedetector configuration, overall radiometer design and platform operational conditions is identified and shown to bea major constraint on the configuration of space-based instruments.
