11 May 1994 Correlational accumulation as a method for signal restoration

Abstract
Signal restoration from multiple copies derived from a single object is investigated for the case in which signal copies are observed mixed with additive signal independent noise and with unknown mutual displacement. The known two stage restoration procedure, registration of the signal realizations by localization of the maximum of the signal copies' cross- correlation functions, followed by averaging of the registered realizations, is analyzed with an emphasis on its properties for very low signal-to-noise ration. The following problems are addressed and solved: optimality of the correlational accumulation in terms of its noise reduction capability; signal distortions which originate from the signal registration errors; noise reduction capability of the correlational accumulation (averaging) as a function of signal-to-noise ratio in the observed signal-plus-noise realizations. A modified correlational accumulation technique with improved capability of restoration of the signal shape is suggested.
