Abstract
This paper outlines the methods adopted by the DRA to obtain focused linear synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images from a long- range, airborne, X-band SAR. We compare the theoretical autofocus performance of four algorithms: fitting the target return, phase estimation, contrast optimisation and multilook registration. Residual phase and azimuthal position errors arising from the focus error are derived and the limitations imposed on the four techniques by the actual scene are discussed. The tracking performances of the algorithms are compared at both high and low frequency and a scheme giving a combination of high-frequency tracking with low distortion introduced. These predictions are then compared with typical aircraft instabilities and the compensated motion frequency response derived. Finally, examples from real SAR data are given illustrating the success of these methods, including the residual distortion and the point response function.
