Abstract
This paper summarizes research performed to develop an image information system to aid in the recognition of Candida strains/species, to analyze trends in Candida outbreaks, and to trace mutations of Candida. The development of an image information system that will (1) incorporate a larger amount of knowledge extracted from an image, (2) allow for query by example, and (3) allow for efficient pattern matching requires the development of an efficient and effective means of representing the images. The result is the addition of semantics to the classical 2D string approach. Through this addition, queries are reduced to matching strings rather than matching multiple features of objects. This paper reports on background information concerning Candida and the extension of 2D strings to include attribute information and the addition of semantic operators to facilitate this expansion.
