Abstract
The four main goals of this paper are as follows: First, address the different types of uncertainty and variability encountered when designing algorithms for automatic estimation of the epicardial and endocardial borders in 2D echocardiographic short- axis image sequences. Second, indicate certain choices forced by the setting. Third, indicate requirements expected of the algorithm. Fourth, address the question of what criteria should be used to decide when a method is a success and point out that wall-thickness, chamber area, and the area change fraction tend to be unstable calculations.
