31 January 1995 Detection of fungi diseases in pine forests using ERS-1 SAR data

ERS-1 SAR data were used to study the potential to map fungi diseases and other forest damage. ERS-1 SAR images were processed into a multitemporal geo-coded data set. Visual interpretation of color composite images were used to identify areas affected by fungi diseases or other forest damage. Eleven test points were inspected on the ground. All non-peatland test points identified as damaged suffered from some kind of stress (fungi diseases, elk damage, drying, or use as pasture land). The test points on peatland suffered from fungi diseases even though the backscatter had increased. The preliminary results suggest that the C-band SAR aboard the ERS-1 satellite seems to have potential for mapping forest damage on mineral soil.
