Abstract
Bloom, the thermal expansion or contraction of the written domains in magneto-optic (MO) recording can cause degraded detection performance at high densities. To study the effect of bloom on the soft bit error rate (BER), we modeled the MO channel in the presence of bloom. Our study indicates that 4 ns of bloom causes two orders of magnitude increase in the BER when Decision Feedback Equalizer (DFE) is used with Run Length Limited (RLL) (1,7) coded Pulsed Width Modulated (PWM) signal.
