Abstract
This paper reviews the basic concepts behind laser cameras developed at the NRC. It emphasizes the critical elements of optimal design and the limitations related to the use of coherent light. It is shown, for example, that speckle noise is a fundamental limit for the position sensing of laser spot centroid. This has an impact on the choice of the position sensor geometry. Design guidelines are presented.
