Abstract
The paper describes a new method for automatic relative orientation of digital stereo images. A linear mathematical model for the relative image orientation is derived and solidified for practical applications. In order to recognize the corresponding points automatically, the method of structure image matching is developed and utilized. The other technologies, such as the pyramid structure, coarse-to-fine strategy, and so on are also integrated in the method. All these technologies together make the method fully automatic. It needs no a priori data such as initial values of orientation elements, the approximate image scale and overlap etc., also no iteration for the computation of the orientation parameters. Several examples are presented to show the efficiency of the new method.
