Abstract
In interferometric optical-fibre sensors using conventional low-birefringence fibre, random fluctuations in the state of polarization (SOP) of the interfering beams give rise to variations in the output fringe visibility[1-4] and, consequently, to fading of the detected interferometric signal. This "polarization induced fading” (PIF) phenomenon is an important drawback which affects the practical applicability of interferometric sensors in a number of areas.
