Bursty traffic which has a high peak rate with respect to the link rate has been shown to be difficult to carry efficiently in ATM networks using currently proposed methods. Bursty traffic is thought likely to occur with future multimedia systems. We propose a device known as a Resource Adjunct Processor (RAP) which will allow burst traffic to be carried efficiently and also overcome the problem of cell loss multiplication. The RAP will do this through intelligent buffering of traffic bursts. Simulation test results are presented to demonstrate the efficiency gains possible.
