28 March 1995 Joint transform correlator for optical outer product associative memory with electron trapping materials

Abstract
Optical associative memories have been demonstrated previously that store an accumulation of outer products. Each outer product represents an associated vector pair. In this paper we use a joint transform correlator with a liquid crystal (LCLV) to form the outer products which are then accumulated by mapping with Argon light onto electron trapping material (ETM). Argon light causes electrons to be trapped at the ETM for later recovery. Further we show for the first time that we can remove the outer product for any one of the associated pairs from the accumulated stored matrix of accumulated outer products. This is accomplished by placing the pair to be removed at the input and using IR instead of Argon light to map the outer product onto the ETM. IR light removes stored electrons in the ETM. Experimental results show the practicality of this approach.
