Abstract
In this apper, a novel approach for introducing effective priorities on high speed DQDB type metropolitan area networks (MANs) is presented. The proposed method can be applied on various bandwidth balancing mechanisms and almost eliminate the effect of low priority traffic on high priority traffic. Its implementation in the case of three bandwidth balancing mechanisms is presented and simulation results are used to investigate the corresponding delay and throughput performance in the presence of multiple priority classes of traffic. A comparison with other, previously proposed, priority mechanisms is also carried out.
