Abstract
In this paper, we describe a nonlinear constitutive relation for magnetostrictive materials that includes coupling between temperature, applied loads, and magnetic field strengths. The model is used to predict the magnetic field requirements for actuating a control flap to reduce the vibrational loads in a rotorcraft system. This prediction is based on the force/displacement requirements presently available in the literature for a particular flap. Results indicate that reasonable changes in the ambient temperature and centrifugal forces generated by the rotating blade strongly influence magnetic field requirements.
