Abstract
Silica glasses are important materials for laser application because of high thermal resistance and relatively lower non-linear refraction index than in silicated glasses. A new preparative technique for obtaining silica gel-glasses is presented. This technique permits us to prepare the silica glasses at low temperature. The preparation of silica gel-glasses with a small contamination of OH and CH maoities is possible by baking the samples in F2 or Cl2 atmosphere. The obtained glass rods were then drawn into fibers. The fiber attenuation was measured on 200 micrometer core diameter fibers using the cut-back technique and in agreement with the IEC 875-1 norm. It was found that the new glass has much lower attenuation characteristics at 1.55 micrometer. We believe that optimization of sol-gel processing will completely eliminate water impurity absorption.
