Abstract
The optical properties of sol-gel glasses doped with Er3+ ions are presented. Samples of regular silica glass and glass prepared with a small amount of Al2O3 were investigated. It was found that the sample with Al2O3 exhibits emission at 1.53 micrometer. Such material can be used for construction of an efficient fiber amplifier. In this paper we present the absorption and emission spectra of both samples. The effect of co- dopants and temperature on optical properties is also discussed.
