Abstract
The purpose of this note is to investigate the genericity and stability of shading patterns in the images of scenes. These notions are defined in terms of the gradient dynamical system of image intensity. The main results are: (1) For a surface of revolution, the generic light source directions are stable. (2) For a surface of revolution, the set of connected components of the set of generic directions refines the set of equivalence classes of stable light source directions, each equivalence being the union of one or more components.
