Abstract
We report here the experimentation of an embedded fiber optic sensor applied on cure monitor and strain measurement of composite materials. This sensor using twisted standard communication gradient optical fibers utilizes the optical loss due to fiber microbending dependance on the internal strain on composites. The choices of optical fibers and parameters of this kind of sensors are discussed in this paper. Recently there has been an international interest in embedding optic fiber sensors in composite materials to monitor the cure process and measure the strain and damage. Many ways have been used, such as the methods of interference, grating, polarization and intensity, etc. Our purpose is to select a simple and inexpensive method. So under the present conditions of our experimental house, we have embedded twisted standard communication multi-modes gradient optical fibers in composite materials and made altogether studies of the cure, the strain and the damage. Satisfied results have been obtained and the method is worthy of further research.
