Abstract

The radar returns from some classes of time-varying point targets can be represented by the discrete-time signal plus noise model: x_t equals s_t plus [v_t plus (eta) _t] equals (summation)_{i equals o} ^{P minus 1} A_ie^j2(pi f(i)/f(s)t) plus v_t plus (eta) _t, t (epsilon) 0, . . ., N minus 1, f_i equals kf_I plus f_o where the received signal x_t corresponds to the radar return from the target of interest from one azimuth-range cell. The signal has an unknown number of components, P, unknown complex amplitudes A_i and frequencies f_i. The frequency parameters f_o and f_I are unknown, although constrained such that f_o less than f_I/2 and parameter k (epsilon) {minus u, . . ., minus 2, minus 1, 0, 1, 2, . . ., v} is constrained such that the component frequencies f_i are bound by (minus f_s/2, f_s/2). The noise term v_t, is typically colored, and represents clutter, interference and various noise sources. It is unknown, except that (summation)_tv_t² less than infinity; in general, v_t is not well modelled as an auto-regressive process of known order. The additional noise term (eta) _t represents time-invariant point targets in the same azimuth-range cell. An important characteristic of the target is the unknown parameter, f_I, representing the frequency interval between harmonic lines. It is desired to determine an estimate of f_I from N samples of x_t. We propose an algorithm to estimate f_I based on Thomson's harmonic line F-Test, which is part of the multi-window spectrum estimation method and demonstrate the proposed estimator applied to target echo time series collected using an experimental HF skywave radar.
