2 October 1998 DVD player for the PC environment

The DVD read-only disk provides high quality storage of audio visual contents, and is especially suitable for the storage of movie contents. Stand-alone consumer playback devices are already available on the market, and wide-spread use of DVD ROM is expected for the PC market, as PC peripheral. In the PC environment, the majority of MPEG1 based layers, such as Video CD players, are software players. Performance of such players is indistinguishable from hardware-based players. However, DVD player that using software only remains a challenging task. To tackle this problem we will describe a DVD player that is based on a new architecture, that allows high quality playback of DVD material. The architecture allows software only playback, as well as hardware assisted DVD playback, while adding little to the total system cost.
