Abstract
The mechanism of the formation of ring shaped pattern of the output light from a multimode optical fiber at the Stokes wavelength of stimulated Raman scattering has been argued in several publications. In this paper,a novel experimental result,i.e.the ring shaped field pattern in backward stimulated Raman scattering is presented to explain the mechanism.lt has been proved that self-focusing plays no role in the formation of the ring shaped structure. The ring shaped pattern is attributed to the refractive index profile of the fiber used in the experiment. The result of numerical calculation shows good agreement with that of the experiment.
