Abstract
Polarization dependent loss (PDL) is an important parameter for optical passive devices used in high speed optical fiber transmission line. In this paper, the polarization dependent losses of some commonly used optical passive devices such as isolators, attenuators and connectors are studied theoretically and experimentally. A simple way for evaluating PDL values for some bulk passive devices such as isolators, attenuators and connectors is presented and the calculated values match well with the measurement results. We believe that this study is helpful for the design of passive devices and the management of optical fiber communication systems.
