17 November 2000 Interruption-free construction of a firewall for research network

Abstract
This paper proposes a novel method to construct a firewall for research network without any interruption. The advantage of the proposed method is that the construction of the firewall does never interrupt the research network which has been already running and used for everyday research activity. There are two key ideas. One is that a new protected network is created and attached on the fly to the currently used research network. The other is that migration from the old unprotected network to the new protected one is quite gradual, i.e. one computer by one computer, not all computers at once. This step by step manner ensures continuous operation of the network and interruption free firewall construction. These ideas are inspired by methods to reconstruct bridges, railroads, motorways, and so on by making bypass to avoid traffic interruption.
