Normal calibration procedures involving in-situ ground truth measurements are not available to the analyst who must deal with inaccessible areas. In this report, procedures for calibrating a scene using elements in the scene itself are described. Several selected potential calibration materials are identified and their uses discussed. Industrial and mining facilities utilizing some of these materials are also identified and discussed. This calibration procedure is then applied to a Landsat Thematic Mapper scene of the Dayton, Ohio area. Encouraging results are obtained. In particular, reasonable agreement for Landsat TM bands one and two is obtained between the resulting calibration constants and test data from coal piles on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
