Abstract
Several standard series of photographs widely used for pilling evaluation in fabric testing laboratories are analyzed. Common information is extracted from the Zweigle and the ASTM standards by applying an objective and automatic method of image analysis. Two features, the total area of pilling and the density of pilling, are extracted and related to the degree of pilling defined by the standard image. The standard series are described and compared in terms of image quality, variety of fabric reference classes, resolution of the grading and recommendation for the assessment.
