Abstract
Moves to start building the virtual observatory are already under way in Europe where funding has been approved for both the Astrophysical Virtual Observatory and the UK's Astrogrid project. This paper outlines some of the data challenges, discusses the merits of FITS and XML for data archiving, the difficulties of finding suitable software for the management of data archives, and for data mining.
