Abstract

This paper presents in vitro the measuring techniques and experimental results of optical parameters of human lung tissue. Optical properties of biotissue are briefly described in the introduction. A new approach to measure optical parameters has been developed. This indirect approach combines the solution of the diffusion theory with a result of Monte Carlo simulation to calculate the optical parameters of normal and carcinomatous human lung tissues in vitro at the wavelengths of 406.7-415.4 nm, 632.8 nm and 676.4 nm, respectively. We obtained the effective attenuation coefficients (mu) _eff and the optical penetration depths (delta) of fresh lung tissue at above violet and red wavelengths, and it is a great help to understand better the optical characteristics of lung tissue in clinical light dosimetry.
