Abstract
We study the upconversion properties of Ta2O5 and Nb2O5 based TeO2 glasses doped with 0.5 mol% Er2O3 after excitation into the 4I level using 980 nm radiation. Green and red emission is observed originating from the (2H, 4S3/2) and 4F9/2 states, respectively. Excited state absorption and energy trasnfer are discussed as possible mechanisms for the upconversion.
