Abstract
The ultimate solution to the access bottleneck is to extend the fiber all the way to the home or office. Having in mind the Capex expenditure for an optical network deployment, a good approach is to share the enormous capacity of fiber among a group of subscribers. Passive optical networks provide this kind of solution as they bypass the need for costly powering, right-of-way space and maintenance of electronic equipment. As a result, PONs cost a fraction of what it takes to run new point-to-point fiber or to rework existing SONET rings.(Abstract only available)
