Abstract
A technique is described for performing two-dimensional (2-D) space-variant operations using two acousto-optic modulators (AOM's) operating in a crossed fashion. A time-integrating detector performs the appropriate summation of output terms for the spatially sampled input. System constraints and the feasibility of performing real-time operations will be discussed, along with the presentation of experimental results. The approach has the potential for broadening the range of operations performed by optical computers.
