Abstract
A novel all-optical NRZ-to-CSRZ converter using an SOA-based fiber loop mirror is demonstrated in this paper for the first time. The converter is operated at 10Gb/s and has the potential to work at 40Gb/s. This converter is optimized by adjusting the optical power ratio of control light and signal light respectively and its performance is evaluated. The minimum power penalty of the converter is measured to be -0.8dB at -13dBm input signal power for NRZ-to-CSRZ conversion and the dynamic range of input NRZ signal is 8dB (from -18dBm to -10dBm) for 0dB power penalty at 10-10 BER. Format conversion between RZ and CSRZ is also realized using such a converter.
