Abstract
This study presents an investigation on the memory effect of plastic optical fiber (POF) for a strain sensor application using the optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR). The hysteresis characteristics of the reflection and transmission loss in the OTDR responses are observed for a tensile strain to the POF cable. The OTDR responses remain even after the external force is removed due to the plastic deformation of the POF if the applied strain is enough high. Then, the temporal change of the responses is recorded as a function of the elapsed time, and the life of the memory effect is discussed. A helical configuration for a distributed load sensor with memory effect is proposed and designed. The helical pitch is so determined that no loss will be generated by winding the POF cable around a rubber tube. In this configuration, the memory effect is produced by the visco-elastic property of the tube.
